Northern California, during the violent end of the 1960s. At the start of summer, a lonely and thoughtful teenager, Evie Boyd, sees a group of girls in the park, and is immediately caught by their freedom, their careless dress, their dangerous aura of abandon. Soon, Evie is in thrall to Suzanne, a mesmerizing older girl, and is drawn into the circle of a soon-to-be infamous cult and the man who is its charismatic leader. Hidden in the hills, their sprawling ranch is eerie and run down, but to Evie, it is exotic, thrilling, charged--a place where she feels desperate to be accepted. As she spends more time away from her mother and the rhythms of her daily life, and as her obsession with Suzanne intensifies, Evie does not realize she is coming closer and closer to unthinkable violence.

I guess technically 3.5. The premise was definitely something I was exciting for with my macabre fascination of cults and such. But this really felt like for the first 80% of the book, nothing really happened. The main character wasn't interesting at all and I kept waiting for her big character arc that never really came. I wanted this to be much darker I suppose. I was waiting for the tipping point of "oh here we go..." of the sick thrill ride, but it was like riding a roller coaster that only goes the speed limit. The last half of the book was definitely better than the first, but I was also listening the audiobook so I felt like I just had to finish it. Had I been reading the physical copy, I likely would've sent it to the graveyard stack of books that are 20% finished.

I eagerly waited for this book to come out. I have been intrigued by the Manson stories for a very long time and have read just about everything there is out there on the crimes, Charles Manson and the Manson followers. Unfortunately this book didn't work for me. I had a very hard time getting in to it, I thought it moved very slow and I just couldn't connect with the characters. The story switches back and forth between back then and now and that didn't work for me either.
