NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * Part love story, part workplace drama, this sharply observed novel is a witty critique of the false judgments we make in a social-media-obsessed world. New York Times bestselling author Sophie Kinsella has written her most timely novel yet.

Everywhere Katie Brenner looks, someone else is living the life she longs for, particularly her boss, Demeter Farlowe. Demeter is brilliant and creative, lives with her perfect family in a posh townhouse, and wears the coolest clothes. Katie's life, meanwhile, is a daily struggle--from her dismal rental to her oddball flatmates to the tense office politics she's trying to negotiate. No wonder Katie takes refuge in not-quite-true Instagram posts, especially as she's desperate to make her dad proud.

Then, just as she's finding her feet--not to mention a possible new romance--the worst happens. Demeter fires Katie. Shattered but determined to stay positive, Katie retreats to her family's farm in Somerset to help them set up a vacation business. London has never seemed so far away--until Demeter unexpectedly turns up as a guest. Secrets are spilled and relationships rejiggered, and as the stakes for Katie's future get higher, she must question her own assumptions about what makes for a truly meaningful life.

Sophie Kinsella is celebrated for her vibrant, relatable characters and her great storytelling gifts. Now she returns with all of the wit, warmth, and wisdom that are the hallmarks of her bestsellers to spin this fresh, modern story about presenting the perfect life when the reality is far from the truth.

This book was lovely from start to finish. Sure it was chock full of cliches and predictability but it’s just such a happy story that will keep a smile on your face for the entire book.

A good beach read.

This book would be described as Rom-Com - except that the Romance is predictable and the Comedy is slapstick. Half the book is spent on Katie trying to convince herself and everybody else to call her Cat. She glamorizes life in London - yes her very drab existence, and finds true satisfaction on her farm in Somerset. The book goes on and on and could have been cut short by 50 %. The ending is very satisfactory if somewhat unrealistic - Oh well, it is a Rom-Com isn't it?

An easy beach read. You don’t have to think too hard. The story line is predictable but fun.

I loved Sophie's stand-alone's for so long...but after a couple duds I stopped reading them. However this was nice and refreshing like her earlier stuff. =) Enjoyable and a quick summer read!

The entire novel focuses on perception, both in real life and online. Not everything is as it seems, and it takes some investigation and proper observation to find the truth. Part office dramedy, part love story, all about navigating adulthood with as much professionalism and gumption as one can muster. Toss in the hilarious scenes Kinsella is known to do, and fans of Cecelia Ahern, Bridget Jones, and Kinsella's other standalones are in for a treat!

4.75 Stars!

I've read a number of this author's books and I've started to realize that you pretty much know what you're going to get in one of Sophie Kinsella's stories, but the overall journey will be different and always entertaining. There's a comfort level in that and why Kinsella is quickly becoming a go-to author for witty and romantic chick lit. Especially when I need a sure thing after a few duds.

My Not So Perfect Life was definitely one of those sure-things. While there were a couple of slower-moving parts within the story, I enjoyed Katie's character arc, as well as those of a few secondary characters. The the light mystery twist to Katie's workplace drama and the empowering conclusion was a sweet story bonus. In the end, it was the slow-burn romance that was deliciously subtle with an effective and swoon-worthy ending, that clinched the story for me. This author knows how to leave the reader with a big smile.

Katie desperately wants to make it in the world of marketing in London. She reinvents herself, hiding all traces of her West Country life and accent. Her boss, Demeter, is brilliant but comes off as uncaring. When Katie is laid off, she gives in to her father and step-mother's pleas to help them start up a glamping business on the family farm. Katie does an outstanding job with the marketing and business plan and the business takes off. When Demeter turns up as one of the guests, Katie learns that Demeter's life is not as perfect as she had imagined it to be. Furthermore, Demeter is about to be fired. Katie delves into the situation and finds out that Demeter's supposed job mistakes were set up by a trio of office workers who didn't like her. All is rectified and Katie ends up getting hired back, this time as a creative director. A romance between young partner Alex and Katie spices up the plot, and the tension between Katie and her dad is resolved in a subplot. Katie learns to be true to her own self and her not-so-perfect life, instead of pretending that she leads a glamorous city life. Typical Kinsella fun. The dad in this book takes on Shopaholic's personality. A good escape read.

‘ “Oh. Yes, it’s fine . . . it’s. . . argh! Oh God! Aaaargh!”
‘With no warning, the world has turned black. For a terrifying instant I think I’m being attacked. Something’s hitting me, banging me, surrounding me. . . . I flail with my arms, panting, panicking . . . then suddenly realize what’s happened. My bloody hammock’s collapsed.

‘I fight my way out of a black jersey skirt which has enveloped my head and survey my bed in dismay. That hammock is hanging dismally from one corner. All my crap is everywhere - clothes, hair products, books, magazines. It’ll take forever to sort all this out again. The only plus is that my bowl of stew was in the floor and didn’t get knocked over.

‘Actually, that’s not a plus.’...

I post utterly unvarnished, unposed, un-Instagrammy photos with captions, and it's turned into one of the most fun hobbies I've ever had. / A photo of bad-tempered crowds on a tube platform: My not-so-perfect commute. A picture of the revolting blister on my heel: My not-so-perfect new shoes. A photo of my hair, drenched: The not-so-perfect London weather. / The amazing thing is how many other people have joined in. Mark from work posted a picture of himself eating a doughnut, captioned My not-so-perfect eat-clean regime. Biddy posted a picture of some ripped trousers, which she'd obviously caught on some barbed wire, entitled My not-so-perfect rural existence, which made me laugh."

"I'd forgotten the smell of London, the busyness, the crowds. I'd forgotten about coming up out of the tube steps into the hot, concentrated city sunshine, surrounded by people of all descriptions, and thinking, I could do anything, go anywhere, be anyone. / Ansters Farm is like a circle. It is what it is. And you basically go round and round in a peaceful way, never digressing. But London's like a spiderweb. There's a million possibilities, a million directions, a million endgames. I'd forgotten that feeling of ... of what? Being on the brink of something." (p. 377)
