If you are familiar with the basic formula for an inspiring film, you probably won't be too surprised by this movie. The formula is done very well here, though, and Queen of Katwe is worth seeing at least once. I'm sure I would have liked it more if I understood and played chess. The movie is rated PG for thematic elements, an accident scene and some suggestive material.

Loved this movie, based on a true story. Highly recommend.

I am sure that the story on which this film was based was inspiring, but the movie was very sanitized with too many Disney emotional moments.

The gift that keeps on giving. My brother recommended this movie, saying he and wife and kids loved it. Well, I liked subject matter, but was worried about Disney treatment. Man was I blown away! Should have known... director Mira Nair usually doesn't disappoint (Monsoon Wedding, Bend It Like Beckham) and here is no exception. She has a real eye for place...and the colors of the land and its people wherever she is telling the story. Also great acting all around.

I too really enjoyed this film and the real life story of this young dirt poor Ugandan that was able to raise her family status through Chess. It was also nice to see at the end of the movie the real life people matched up with the actresses and actors. Interestingly tonight on 60 Minutes, was a segment on a teaching program in Mississippi using Chess as an educational platform.

Good family movie. American that say they are poor should view this movie.

Very good family movie. Not the typical Disney princess film. Based on true story of a Ugandan girl from a very poor family, who through education and perseverance, rises above her circumstances to achieve a measure of success. Not a rags-to-riches story exactly, but a bit more realistic. Also shows that she didn't at first succeed, but tried again.Very inspiring, particularly for kids in the 7 to 12 (or older) age range. Highly recommended family viewing for all ages.

A fantastic watch! We viewed this with my 88 year father and 11 year old daughter and everyone really liked this exploration of cultures and the stories that lie therein. I particularly enjoyed the Ugandan scenic shots; so realistic and unpolished. An inspiring story but not at all Disney-like as some earlier comments suggested; although it does end with optimism, there is no prince to save the day and not everything shines brilliantly at the end. You do feel hopeful and encouraged after watching it, which is different from blindly seeing the lead characters portrayed as thinking, "I now have everything I ever wanted!!". Recommended.
