The German-born director/producer Uwe Boll is reviled by many movie fans and critics and often comes up as a candidate for one of the worst directors working today (Michael Bay says, "Hey! Don't forget about me.") His films include "Bloodrayne," "Postal," and "Alone in the Dark." This awkwardly titled movie is his fantasy adventure epic, clearly trying to capture some of the "Lord of the Rings" magic, but mostly evoking cheesy 80s swords and sorcery movies like "Conan," "Willow," and "Beastmaster." Somehow, he assembled a pretty respectable cast, including Jason Statham, Ray Liotta (totally out of place), Leelee Sobieski, Ron Pearlman, Matthew Lillard (awful), and Burt Reynolds, who is hilariously miscast and whose expression seems to say "What am I doing here?" As ridiculous as it is, it's bad enough to be entertaining so it gets 2 stars from me. Based on a video game.

Epic of an old folk lore of kings, heroes, demons, magi and love. As the lyrics of the song "Skalds and Shadows" at the end suggested (link in video:)
Would you believe in a night like this?
A night like this
When visions come true
Would you believe in a tale like this?
A lay of bliss
We're praising the old lore
Come to the blazing fire and
See me in the Shadows
See me in the Shadows
Songs I will sing
Of runes and rings
Just hand me my harp
This night turns into myth
Nothing seems real
You soon will feel
The world we live in
Is another skald's
...

Disappointing for a Jason Statham movie. Not very interesting, and boring fight scenes. Script is not very smart, and none of the acting is very good.

Skip it. The intent is good - fantasy adventure where good triumphs over evil but the actors to portray those characters are just wrong. Namely, Ray Liotta as the evil wizard, who looks more like he just came out of a L.A. spa and Burt Reynolds as the king - there could've been some other actors out there to play these roles. Jason Stratham is always fun to watch - too bad he was stuck with this script. The whole film feels like a televison "movie of the week". Oh yes, it tries to rip off Lord of the Rings - why bother.

Only in the extended B/R version:
Fallow: ... which leaves you and I time to explore.
Muriella: And what would you have us explore?
Fallow: Well, each other's charms to begin with.
Muriella: That might keep you busy for quite some time.
Fallow: Mmn Hmn
Muriella: But it leaves me with very little to do.

King: You have qualities, you know. Leadership. And, of course you speak your mind.
This will serve you well. Wisdom is our hammer. Prudence will be our nail. When men build lives from honest toil ... Courage never fails.
===
Muriella: Gallian... Must you always appear so suddenly from nowhere?
Gallian: I don't. I appear so suddenly from somewhere.
===
Merick: Gallian, you and I are the last of the magi. I beg you, recognize that you have fallen into madness.
Gallian: You have no idea how powerful madness can be. In my kingdom, there will be
no word for madness. We shall simply call it...power.

General: Peasant, do not forget to whom you speak. In your world, don't you bow before your king?
Farmer: In my world, the king's army's expected to protect the kingdom. Not just the castle.
===
Merick: Does it occur to you, Farmer...that there may be events of greater importance
than the loves and losses of our particular lives?
===
King: What kind of joke do the gods play on me?
Merick: Sometimes the gods know what is best for us.
King: What the hell does that mean?
Merick: You remember the chaos we were in? Hmm? War everywhere. Surrounded by enemies. If that child had been taken back to Castle Ehb...
===
Fallow: You never did trust me, did you, Muriella?
Muriella: Your comportment has never earned trust.
Fallow: Comportment? Decorum? Those are words for a castle. We-We are no longer in a castle. There are no rules here.

Norick: Damn it, Farmer, would it kill you to just talk for a little while? I mean, we're not animals. People actually do converse with one another.
Farmer: Norick, if I could talk these turnips out of the ground, I would. When the rains come, this ground turns to clay. Not even you could talk 'em out of the ground then.
===
Farmer: Remember, when men build lives from honest toil - Courage never fails.
===
Father: So, how were sales at the market?
Solana: It was good. Of course, the men tried to take advantage of me because I'm a woman... so I make them pay more because I'm a woman.
===
General: I listen only to the king.
Fallow: It might behoove you... to learn a little respect.
General: Respect is earned.
Fallow: You are mistaken. Respect is my birthright!
