Like designer turned director Tom Ford's first film, "A Single Man," "Nocturnal Animals" is very pretty and very boring, even if it's sort of a thriller. There's a double narrative that hangs together loosely and a lot of good actors with not a lot to do. Michael Shannon's Texas sheriff is the best part of the movie. I think it's a little body shaming to call the first five minutes disgusting. Also, there were no nocturnal animals-no bats, no owls, nothing-in this film. Rip off.

I watched this awhile ago and maybe I missed the first 5 minutes because I don't remember the disgusting horror others report. I do however remember the toilet scene, and I LOVED it, total perfection in my mind.

It is just as well that the director, in the bonus material, explains what the movie is all about, because the two stories do not mesh as well as he would have us believe. The inside story, from the novel, is a very conventional tale of back country violence. The framing story is far more interesting, but not in the way the director intended. The upscale LA society is so well portrayed that with some expansion it would make an excellent satire of modern life. The sets, the costumes and the cinematography are so magnificent that they steal the attention from the drama. Nevertheless, the film works best as a portrait of a lonely woman, punctuated by a very appropriate ending.

It was interesting with a good story, I would have given it four stars if not for the first five minutes as it was just disgusting and unnecessary.

A very good movie with a fantastic soundtrack by the very gifted Abel Korzeniowski that is reminiscent of Bernard Hermann. This is a reflective movie with excellent casting, direction, production values and superb acting.

The first five minutes are the most disgusting thing I have ever witnessed. Then it turns to love and horror and terror and revenge. By the way, the accents are corny.

This is a quintessential Tom Ford movie. It's sensual, it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up, and it'll take you on twists and turns you aren't expecting. He pushes the actors boundaries and everyone was so well cast in this movie. It's unique and masterful.

I’m not going to even tell you what this movie is about—what it’s theme is—because that would rob you of the pleasure you’ll get from deciding that for yourself.
“Sounds like work!” I imagine some will say. Nah. It’s fun! Believe me, I watched this with my wife and a friend, and wow, the FUN we had discussing this fascinating, thought-provoking and—yes!—suspenseful movie. Big questions: WHY? WAS SHE...? DID HE...?

Writer-director Tom Ford combines relationship drama and film noir police crime drama in this story of a deteriorating relationship starring Jake Gyllenhall, Amy Adams and—in yet another terrific supporting role—Michael Shannon (one day this guy’s gonna win an Oscar. He doesn’t play a part, he INHABITS it.)

And the ending...shattering.
This is a good one.

I did not really like this film. The opening scenes were disgusting. I know they were supposed to be art, but they were over-the-top terrible. The toilet scene was completely unnecessary to the story and revolting! I appreciated the way the stories wove into each other and I understood what the story was saying. It was spelled out in one of the pictures hanging in the gallery. The acting was very good and it is a situation that could happen. Lots of violence, not much swearing and some partial nudity. The bonus features are worth watching.

- No, we're not perfect for each other, Edward. We may be perfect for each other if we didn't live in the real world, but I live in the real world and I need a life that is more structured. I need a future that is more structured.
Hey.
-I want to be the person that you want me to be, but I just can't.
You are. You are.
- I can't be that.
Hey, no, stop.
-I, I really wanted to be this person that you thought I was, I really did, but I'm just not that person. I'm, I'm cynical, I'm pragmatic.
No, look...
-No, I am. I'm a realist.
You're afraid. You're afraid.
-No, I'm not afraid.
We've been through this so many times before.
- I'm not scared. I'm not scared. I'm unhappy. All right. I'm just really, really unhappy. You're so... You really are so wonderful and you're just so sensitive and romantic and...
Weak. That's right, yeah.
- What? I did not say you were weak.
You've said it so many times before.
- I did not call you weak.
You've said it before, so why don't you say it again? Weak.

Susan, keep seeing him if you have to, live with him, I don't care, but do not marry him. I understand what you see in Edward. I get it. ... He is a romantic. But he is also very fragile. I saw that when his father died. Don't... Don't do this. You'll regret it. And you'll only hurt Edward in the end. The things you love about him now are the things you'll hate in a few years. You may not realize it, but you and I are a lot more alike than you think.
- No. You're wrong. You and I are nothing alike.
Really? Just wait. We all eventually turn into our mothers.
===
Well, when you love someone, you work it out. You don't just throw it away. You have to be careful with it. You might never get it again.
-I can't do this with you anymore, Edward. I just can't keep doing this.
Susan... You can't just walk away from things all the time.

My ex-husband used to call me a nocturnal animal.
===

Why are you so driven to write?
-I guess it's a way of keeping things alive. You know, saving things that will eventually die. And if I write it down, then, it'll last forever.
===

You sound like your mother.
-Well, you always said that I reminded you so much of her, so... You know, this is exactly why I don't wanna read your work because you always get so fxcking defensive.
Yeah, of course I'm defensive! Do you know what it feels like to put yourself out on the line creatively and then have someone you love tell you that they don't understand it?
-No, I don't, because I'm not creative...
That's because you choose not to be.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: A rape of a teenage girl is shown briefly. The violence is very realistic and unnerving.
