Stunning, sophisticated production that does the Masada story justice. Heroic yet ultimately tragic defense by the Jews against the Roman invasion.

Masterful directing by Boris Sagal from an excellent and provocative screenplay filled with tension and drama. Rousing music though nothing special. The water scenes are priceless. The battle scenes modest yet enthralling.

Acting is awe-inspiring. Peter Strauss (see him in "Jericho Mile" an earlier film of his) is perfect as Eleazer. And then there is the incomparable Peter O'Toole as Silva, who commands the screen like no one else. The voice, the facial expressions, the timing - utterly outstanding. His scenes with Barbara Carrera (also very good) are captivating.

A quality drama you rarely see nowadays, more's the pity.

Best line: "Stay out of politics my friend, you're too honest." Plus ca change...!

Fantastic mini-series, truly a classic in cast, entertainment and script.
Excellent for fans of history and action adventure genres. Costuming was impeccable, the Roman armor appearing very near to the uniforms of the first century AD and the Palestinians wore robes and headgear very similar to what they have worn and can often be seen wearing in the the Middle East today.

This is a fantastic mini-series. If you are a fan of other classics like Ben-Hur, The Ten Commandments, Spartacus etc...then this is a must see!

383 minutes about one of the most interesting military confrontations and cultural clashes in all of ancient history ! ...a feast for buffs and 'civilians' alike.

I've been there--it was a marvelous experience and a wonderful view of the Dead Sea.

I was in Israel last month and visited Masada. This movie adds to all I have heard and learned about this fortress. It's amazing how great Herod was. He might not have been a nice guy but a genius. And the Romans spend 6 months in those terrible conditions to built their ramp - who else could be so persistent.

WOW! What a film! Take away all the special effects of today and you really get a masterpiece! Everything about this film from the powerful cast, soundtrack and story was so enthralling and captivating! It's not too often that I find a mini-series, let alone a film to keep me hungry for more, albeit the ending came as a bit of a shock to me. I've not read the novel...I may or may not in the future...probably not as it may prejudice me against what I've seen. Usually movies based off of books don't go too well when you have read a book beforehand. I like this mini-series the way it is.

Truly a great classic. Must see. Wrong in some aspects -- the Masadists were actually brigands who ravaged other Jews -- but outstanding overall. Thoughtful and controversial: subsidized by Israel and seemingly pro-Jews -- but still sympathetic to Romans. Suggests both religions irrational? Hugely entertaining.
