Add a CommentDisappointing. Not up to past standards. The "twists" at the end didn't make the story any more interesting.
Had never read this author before but was really pulled into the story! Will definitely look for other books by him to read now!
Best Billingham in a long while; it handles honour killings amongst the south-asian communities in England.
Have read all the Tom Thorne books - this is the best!!
Can't believe this is #14, always great to catch up with Tom & Phil. In this outing Tom teams up with Nicola Tanner, a by-the-book detective who suffered a personal loss, to infiltrate the closed community behind honour killings in London.
The subject matter is chilling. As Tanner & Tom try to make inroads, we follow those responsible for the murders in alternate chapters. As usual the plot is full of twists & there are several characters whose loyalties are questionable. Billingham reserves a couple of WTH moments for the end to provide some surprising answers.
It's also a more personal story as the author gives us a closer look at Tom & Helen's relationship. It's a dark, atmospheric read that clips along at a good pace & deals sensitively with a difficult subject.
