Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn's Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds--revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love--Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Wild, well written, entertaining coming of age story told from the retired celebrities perspective. Enough twists and sub-plots to keep you engaged. At times, this was too out there for me, but I want to read more from the author - VERY WELL WRITTEN.

I loved this book. Taylor Jenkins Reid is an awesome author. I was not sure how this book would go, but from the beginning, I could not put it down. I felt all the emotions from laughter to tears, from reading about someone's life during their early Hollywood career to their personal life and the impact it had on life decisions.

I would highly recommend this book with a glass of wine. When I finished it, I wanted to immediately call the author and say - BRAVO! This book is the total package of what a great book is all about.

Loved this book about an aging Hollywood actress that bares all, about her life and how she got to where she is. The twist at the end and how she never apologizes for who she became, or what she did to get there is fantastic.

I don't normally concern myself with the gossip magazines- since I don't care one whit about the lives of celebrities. They aren't interested in my life- why should I be interested in theirs? However, this novel is about the life of a fictitious movie star of the 50's and 60's, her secret love life and her vast lies and cover-ups. It came highly recommended, and I got it for free on audiobook, so away I went. It centers heavily on the price of fame- you need to sell your body, your privacy, and your soul to make it big. This might come as a shock to some, but I was not surprised that Evelyn constantly used her body to get ahead in life. She is relentlessly referred to as the most beautiful woman on the planet- every chapter or so we are reminded- as if we'd suddenly forget. All of her marriages were for her benefit, which, again, didn't surprise me. Evelyn is bisexual, and this is her big reveal (this happens about 1/3 of the way into the book). She has fallen in love with a woman, and her story chronicles how they stay together and keep it secret. That's the whole book in a nutshell. It was intriguing and easy to listen to, but I was bored in parts. I found I couldn't identify at all with Evelyn or any of her close friends or family. They were rich beyond measure movie stars who were in love with themselves and their lifestyle. It seemed to me that Evelyn loved her career more than anything else (except maybe herself) and that's why I really couldn't get behind her love story.
Well written, entertaining enough, but just not for me.

I think this is my favorite book of all time. I picked it up because I have been having a hard time getting into new books recently and everything just seems too boring. If you are feeling that way at all.... you need to read this book!!!!!!!! I expected it to be glamorous and scandalous, and it was, but it was so much more. It is about making what you want happen in life, the toughest decisions, love and heartbreak, and trying to live without regret. On top of the amazing themes and plot, the diverse representation (specifically of bisexual and biracial people) made this book unforgettable.

I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it for a book club! Lots of symbolism and topics that would make for a good discussion with a group of friends. I found it especially interesting that the "kitchen" was frequently at odds with the main character, Evelyn.

3-1/3 stars this book would be a fun read on a plane ride to paris, london, hong kong, tokyo.. it recalls a bygone age when celebrities were very protective of their image, not 'accidentally' releasing tawdry sex tapes and thinking notoriety equals glamour. by the end, having seven husbands actually made some sense. evelyn hugo was a woman who did what she had to to achieve her goals. she is fierce and unapologetic, a fascinating woman.
