The Faraway Nearby
Photographs of Canada From The New York Times Photo Archives
THE FARAWAY NEARBY presents a century of Canadian history through photographs published in the Unites States' "newspaper of record." The book and related exhibition are drawn from a collection of nearly 25,000 photogra phs of Canadian subject matter from The New York Times Photo Archive, now at the Ryerson Image Centre in Toronto, Ontario. Texts by an international team of authors explore how Canada's visual identity was constructed--both from within and without--through the dissemination of images of major political events, iconic landscapes, notable figures, and the lives of everyday Canadians.
