Risky Business: A Look Inside America's Adult Film Industry examines the social, psychological, and economic impacts of performing in adult films. What makes people decide to become adult entertainers, how do they go about entering the business, what are their experiences in the business, and how do they deal with career options, finances, and relationships once they exit the business? The documentary also examines proposed regulations that would address current industry issues, including workplace health and safety, such as mandatory STD testing and condom use, and job discrimination once performers decide to leave the industry and pursue conventional employment. "I decided to make this film because I felt that most people working as performers in the adult entertainment industry weren't in positions to be able to advocate for themselves regarding workplace safety and post-industry employment discrimination. The analogy I often use is that of Nike's old controversy surrounding underpaid child workers in developing countries, whom Nike had used to manufacture their shoes. In that case, there was nothing wrong with the product itself (e.g., Nike shoes don't cause foot cancer, hurt one's feet, etc.), and thus there is no reason the product should not be made available to the marketplace. But, there are ethical and moral issues stemming from the use of underpaid child workers, even in countries where it is legal to do so. Similarly, there is nothing wrong with pornography as a product. Unlike alcohol and tobacco, which cause thousands of deaths annually, nobody has ever died from an overdose of pornography. However, even though pornography is acceptable as an available product in the marketplace, the people who work as performers in the adult industry are continually exposed to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), have very little autonomy in deciding whether or not they can protect themselves with condoms at any given production, and have very little knowledge or power to fight back against employment discrimination once they decide to exit the industry and look for conventional work. This film takes the audience into the world of adult industry performers. It shows where performers come from, the process by which they enter the business, and what often happens after they leave the adult business, including issues with establishing and maintaining intimate relationships and mainstream employment. It examines the social, psychological, and economic impacts of choosing to work as a performer in the adult industry." David Mech - Producer/Director
