Crumb enters a territory as spooky as it is fascinating ... a portrait of an artist as misanthrope and bad-boy visionary, as joker and sex maniac, and finally as hero.

So gifted an artist, but so terribly mentally ill.

An inspiring movie about inspiration, imagination, creativity, loneliness, family troubles and mental illness.

The premiere documentary about growing up weird in the U.S.A. R. Crumb is the iconic cartoonist of the 1960s and 1970s, who also enjoys masochism and piggy back rides -- and he is the sane one of his family. Gutwrenchingly funny and sad.

Crumb bears some uncanny resemblances to Woody Allen; his whining voice, ceaseless complaining, his perpetual conviction that life has shafted him, his intense dislike of being the subject of someone's biopic. Terry Zwigoff got Crumbs reluctant participation in this movie by appealing to Crumb's compassion. Zwigoff was in perpetual torment with neck and back pain that medical science could not alleviate. In retrospect, Zwigoff says the only thing that kept him sane was the gun under his pillow; he had the means of escaping his torment by blowing his brains out. Crumb felt so sorry for his friend that he did the movie in the hope of cheering the young director up. This collaboration resulted in the finest documentary of all time. The only thing the film fails to address is the refusal of Crumb's two sisters to appear on camera. I wonder why.

One of my absolute favourite documentaries of all time. Such an intimate, essential look into several deeply active and disturbed psyches.

Fantastically shot, directed and edited doc about the genius that brought us Fritz the Cat, cover of Cheap Thrills (Janis Joplin), Weirdo and much more. Extremely eccentric but the most "normal" and adjusted of his whole family. The doc spends a lot of time, as it should, on his talented but more disturbed brother. You end up pining for more footage of his mother whom his brother lived with as they say was originally against being filmed but eventually became comfortable with the camera which they state in the doc, but likely for focal reasons only used one clip. Excellent and relevant footage of him and his brother. Interesting to see how Robert deals with his nervousness regarding the dysfunction and his discomfort through humor / making light of their father's abuse and other topics.
A well produced documentary on an important contributor to American underground pop culture.

It was fine.

I was amazed by the similarities and parallels between Robert Crumb and Woody Allen. They even sound alike. The unquestionable talent, the neuroses and dislike of the media, the constant irritating whining, the narcissistic sense of entitlement and their attitudes to sex and women where they womanize while projecting themselves as the underdogs and trying to get away with as much as they possibly can. Both artists have amassed a substantial net worth yet they feel life has somehow short-changed them.

Excellent bio of three creative brothers from a difficult family. Great for Crumb fans,.. but perhaps a half hour too long (120 minutes) for others.

The camera followed the famed cartoonist Robert Crumb casually, looking at many of his works, and joining in the discussions between Crumb, his women, and his too equally, if not more, eccentric brothers. If you are a fan of Crumb you will find this documentary informative and entertaining.
