New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner is at the top of her form as she takes us on a desperate manhunt for a killer who preys upon his victims' minds--just before he claims their lives.

What do you do when a killer targets the people you love the most? When he knows how to make them vulnerable? When he knows the same about you?

These are the questions that haunt FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy. The police say his daughter's death was an accident. Quincy will risk everything to learn the truth--and there's only one person willing to help. Ex-cop Rainie Connor had once been paired professionally--and personally--with the brilliant FBI profiler. He helped her through the darkest days of her life.

Now it's time for Rainie to return the favor. But this killer is like none these two hard-boiled pros have ever encountered. This twisted psychopath has an insatiable hunger for revenge...and for fear. As the clock ticks down to one unspeakably intimate act of vengeance, the only way Rainie can unmask this killer is to step directly in his murderous path. She will become a murder waiting to happen. She will be... the next accident .

I chose this book because I had read a later book about Kimberly Quincy and it kept referencing her past - which is told in this book. I may now have to go back to find the book about Rainie's past as I'm assuming there is one.

That means I was predisposed to liking this book as I was already intrigued about what exactly happened (which was only alluded to vaguely in the later book). Gardner's pacing is excellent as always. She does an excellent job of crafting a thoroughly twisted story.

The only reason I downgrade this one to 3.5 stars is that I predicted most of the major twists (which is unusual in Gardner's books - and no, I didn't get them from reading the later book; the foreshadowing felt heavier than usual) while, at the same time, the "and this is why" part of the twist came out of nowhere and didn't feel foreshadowed at all. It seems odd to ding a book for being simultaneously too predictable and too unpredictable but that's just how I feel so I'm going with it.

Nevertheless, it's a good book and I'm definitely glad I read it.

Do yourself a favor and skip the Prologue. Not only is it sexually graphic and upsetting, it also spoils the anticipation of what happens in the story. Otherwise, it is a very interesting read with well-rounded characters and interesting side stories.

When FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy's daughter is killed in a drunk driving accident, Quincy knows it wasn't an accident. He hires Rainie Connor to find out what happened. Little did he know that someone was after everyone he cared about and trying to frame him. Quincy has to find out who is doing this and stop him before the next person he cares about is killed. This is a page turner from beginning to end.

Could be an interesting story, cussing
