How do you prove a murder without a body? Ten years ago, Reece Bower was accused of killing his wife, a crime he always denied. Extensive police searches near his home in Bakewell found no trace of Annette Bower's remains, and the case against him collapsed. But now memories of the original investigation have been resurrected for Detective Inspector Ben Cooper - because Reece Bower himself has disappeared, and his new wife wants answers.

Contrary to the two negative comments, I enjoyed it -
especially the beginning and ending.

Dead in the Dark, 17th in the Cooper/Fry saga. Having read 'em all (this series had always exhibited the hallmarks of good reading) let me venture to say this offering is different. Firstly, on a technical basis, either human proofreading has been done away with, or the computer algorithm in use must be a cheapo freebie, no doubt in both cases to aid and abet cutting publishing costs. The novel is riddled with typos, errors in grammatical syntax, random word insertions, and so forth to such an extent it drove this reader to grit his teeth. Now, as regards the contents, Booth has imbued the novel with a prevalent sense that life no longer offers limitless possibilities. Much of Cooper's and Fry's careers are in the rear view mirror. Derbyshire is not what it was twenty years ago, eviscerated of substance, replaced with prescribed, vacuous going through the motions. To wit, society worn out by the blandishments of political correctness; overrun by hordes for whom common sense decency is an unaffordable luxury, and whose hallmark trait is pervasive ennui.

All series run out of steam at some point and this book really lacked energy. Felt like author was just going through the motions. Not awful, just lacked momentum. Same characters but no more developed than before. A bit of a taken from the headlines plot line. I'll probably try the next one if only to confirm my opinion and give the series another chance.
