Movie worth watching, it was sad to see the hardships the children grew up with.

A comment regards books translated to screen - they very rarely compare favourably with the book particularly if produced with the polished good looks of the Hollywood dream machine. Having relieved myself of this I would still recommend Glass Castle for those who have not read the book as well as for those who enjoy a good story (though at times depressing), good performances, and the special features often included at movie's end. Regards good performances, I would cite the younger Jeanette character played by Ella Anderson who I suspect will start to appear more often in movies requiring youth. For those who might be interested in a portrayal of the affects alcoholism on families I would recommend Angel's Ashes over Glass Castle as it shows the ruin that drinking often brings upon families in a more vivid way.

A very sanitized version of the (much better) book. I think this movie tries too hard to make the father likeable, and left out all the really horrible things that these kids went through because of his decisions. If a few more had been added (and I know they all couldn't have been due to length of the movie) we would've had to balance the intricacies of the relationship--genius, damaged, loving, neglectful, alcoholic, etc. the same way the main character would have. Instead, we are told that he (and the mother) are yes, damaged, but more "quirky" than people who couldn't even bother to feed their children. It just didn't work for me.

My first reaction after finding this blu-ray at the Sardis branch: howcum I've never heard of this movie? I mean, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts? And another Oscar-winner, younger Brie Larson (Room, 2015). Lost in the myriad of 2017 releases, overshadowed by monsters and superheroes, maybe.

Glad I found it; it's a good one. BUT--be forewarned--It explores some uncomfortable truths about families and the individuals within them. NOBODY is perfect or even near-perfect in this real-life story, based on the memoir by the woman who lived it.

Critics have been somewhat harsh about this movie, which I believe may reflect some of their personal conflicts about their own family "skeletons." That's what this movie is mainly about, as four kids attempt to escape Appalachia poverty, a neglectful artistic mother and drunken dreamer-father. Wow. Sounds like a downer, right? Wrong.

Lots to laugh at here, lots to shake your head at in disbelief and just go..."wow." You'll be thinking about this movie for days.

Terrific performances, not only by the three named above, but also by a number of kids who portray the children at various ages. Amazing, all.

This kids grew up with a drinker, that placed them in all kinds of danger. The father was abused my his mother and this caused him to failure in life. He failed his children and wife and led his family into dangerous situations. Sexual abuse as a child led him to making poor choices with his own family.

Terrible how these kids grew up. What the heck was wrong with their mother? Alcoholism and abuse are not pretty subjects.

I've read the book, actually it reads like fiction, who would have a life like the book depicts, but it is based on fact! Also saw the movie and now the dvd. I wanted to watch the extras at the end of the movie, I found them interesting. I've read two other books by Jeannette Walls, Half-Broke Horses was interesting the other was not.

Anyone giving negative comments on this film simply didn't understand it. This film doesn't glorify abuse, they just shine a light on it. So many times movies try to lighten the mood by making the characters or situations likable. Woody Harrelson's character never becomes likable, even after his death. what Jeanette and her siblings had to go through is beyond reprehensible and this adaptation of her memoir is right on point.

Excellent acting by the cast all around... the younger ones were just as strong as Naomi, Woody, and Brie. I would highly recommend. Some things are left out from the book, but it still flows well.... you never feel bored.

I doubt anyone could have played the part of the abusive, alcoholic father better than Woody Harrelson. Great cast of actors brought this heartbreaking story to life.

Based on the memoirs of Jeanette Walls. Watch the extras to see the woman that the story is based on. Performances by the children were amazing.
