They meet at a local tavern in the small town of Belleville, Delaware. Polly is set on heading west. Adam says he's also passing through. Yet she stays, and he stays - drawn to this mysterious redhead whose quiet stillness both unnerves and excites him. Over the course of a punishing summer, Polly and Adam abandon themselves to a steamy, inexorable affair. Still, each holds something back from the other - dangerous, even lethal secrets. Then someone dies. Was it an accident or part of a plan? By now Adam and Polly are so ensnared in each other's lives and lies that neither one knows how to get away - or even if they want to. Is their love strong enough to withstand the truth, or will it ultimately destroy them? Something - or someone - has to give. Which one will it be?

** review of Sunburn.
As a fellow Baltimorian who has watched Laura 's rise from a Baltimore Sun reporter to great crime writer, I was very disappointed with SUNBURN. It was a long slog until the last chapter.
I put it down several times wondering why I was wasting my time reading this - Lippman's Tess Monahan series are fast paced and intriguing while Sunburn was just boring.

I finished the book out of respect for this writer but would not recommend it.

Polly Costello, or whatever her name is today, is a study in abused women trying to get their own back. She seems to go from one victim, abuser, rescuer triangle to another. Polly is a very good manipulator. She does know where she wants to end up, but none of the men in her life can figure it out--until it's too late. It's also questionable whether Polly is sure whether she's going to get where she wants to be. Until the end, I couldn't figure out where that was, and Lippman wasn't giving any hints. We see the thoughts of the major characters from their viewpoints and their view of the other characters; but, until the end, all we can figure out is where they're going to intersect and maybe crash. If you like puzzles, this is a great read.

A true page turner: loved the complex characters, the motives and definitely the surprise at the end: a perfect cloudy day book
