After seeing a couple comments I was interested in reading this book. I've been to Paris a couple times and love the city so that made me somewhat familiar with the background.

The book started out very well but soon developed into a tedious Teeter totter of events. The ending was a bit bizarre too. I was left with a feeling of disgust for both the mother and especially her husband.

I would only recommend this book to people who enjoy stories that are bizarre.

I had high hopes from the blurb but this must be one of the most tediously written books I have ever read. I most certainly will not bother seeking out any other books by this author.

This novel is more than a story about trying to live in a foreign city (Paris). It is about the challenges that raising a family can bring to both parent-partners individually as well as as a partnership; parenting is really an exercise of resilience. I enjoyed how the author wove French artist (literary and film) into the story line. This is the kind of novel I enjoy reading in preparation of traveling to a new place for the first time.

This is a terrific read for anyone interested in Paris and the works of Bemelman's and Lamorisse. It almost felt as if the author wanted to write biographies rather than fiction, and though I learned quite a bit about Bemelman's and Lamorisse, I sometimes felt disconnected from the characters and the novel. But I'm still thinking about this book, weeks after having finished it, and that is always a good sign of something intriguing!

One of my favorite new books of 2018! Mystery, family, Paris, The Red Balloon, Madeline - an adventure in Paris with honesty, love and a passion for books.
