"Explores the history, culture, and politics of Texas, while holding the stereotypes up for rigorous scrutiny. God save Texas is a journey through the most controversial state in America. It is a red state in the heart of Trumpland that hasn't elected a Democrat to a statewide office in more than twenty years; but it is also a state in which minorities already form a majority (including the largest number of Muslim adherents). The cities are blue and among the most diverse in the nation. Oil is still king but Texas now leads California in technology exports. The Texas economic model of low taxes and minimal regulation has produced extraordinary growth but also striking income disparities. Texas looks a lot like the America that Donald Trump wants to create. And Wright's profound portrait of the state not only reflects our country back as it is, but as it was and as it might be"--

A thoughtful, touching love letter to the State of a Texas, in all its self-satisfied, ugly/beautiful glory.

Wright has spent most of his life as a Texas writer and takes an at times memoir-like look at his life and times in the Lone Star State. At other times, he’s just telling stories of events and people, including history, culture, weather disasters, oil, cowboys, presidents, big business, borders and politics. His is a pretty even-handed, self-deprecating view.

Some in my family spent years living in Texas so I found this book a trip down memory lane as the author and I are the same age. Some of his stories made me laugh out loud. There are some characters. Big state; big impact on us all.

Really enjoyed this book. Loved how the author was able to seamlessly write about god, guns, and republicans all without stoking the flames of hate and anger. He managed to write a well informed book without taking sides. For anyone curious about Texas, this is the book for you.

as Gail Collins put it, "Like it or not, as Texas goes, so goes the nation." This book is a great look, region by region, of just HOW Texas goes.

I revere journalists, and I love this book. I learned a lot about Texas, its history, and some of its many notable people. Wright is an excellent writer, and seems like a kind man.
