Beautiful and heartbreaking. Parvana lives in the Taliban's Afghanistan. When her father is arrested, she must disguise herself as a boy to support her mother and siblings.

A very sad but wonderful story of a girl, Parvana, putting herself at great risk to reunite with her wrongly imprisoned father as her country is on the brink of civil war. This short graphic novel does not include an ending with a resolution, though perhaps it was designed to serve as a wonderful bridge to entice reluctant readers to attempt further, more substantive reading -- such as the Parvana trilogy!

When Parvana’s father is arrested for teaching girls to read, she must earn money for the family. The only way to do this is to dress as a boy. In worn torn Afghanistan the family must find a way to survive while also finding her father. This is a moving story about the struggles for people in Afghanistan.
