I love sci-fi and I work in vfx, so there is lots here to potentially enjoy. That said, the dialogue between the two main characters, and between them and other characters, is utterly insufferable - like listening to teenagers loudly chewing gum with their mouths open. I watched the entire film with the sound off.

Every great film revolves around the writing. And most bad films meet their demise because of it. I rest my case.

I think it's a nice little gem. I watched it twice and still liked it.

On its own, the acting seems a bit stilted but that matches the style of the highly influential series of graphic novels (dating back to 1967) it was based on. The special effects are good and the "big market" is particularly prescient. It is also worth noting that, despite no mention in the film title and a "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977) ending, the strong female lead Laureline is portrayed as equal to and at times more competent than Valerian.

Supreme visual effects throughout the movie. Story is interesting. I think the acting of the two main characters is good enough, as the overall movie is quite enjoyable.

If you've seen "The Fifth Element," you kinda know what to expect from the unstoppable French hackmeister Luc Besson, who has perfected a maximalist, beat you into submission style that keeps Michael Bay awake at night. Valerian is an intergalactic secret agent. . .Mon dieu, I thought you were interested in the plot! I'll say this, I wasn't bored. The leads have the charisma of a sofa left out on the curb. I'm not sure who convinced Clive Owen and Ethan Hawke to show up. If you liked "Jupiter Ascending," you'll love this. Trigger warning: It may scorch your retinas.

This was really a let down. Based on a French comic, just about everything came together to make this movie happen. The CGI is impressive, the concept is great, the supporting cast does a splendid job, and it's eye-catching all the time... except for the protagonists. I don't know how or why, but they somehow found the most unlikable male and female to lead this movie, and they single-handedly drag down what would otherwise be a memorable movie.

Honestly, the only reason my star rating is 2.5 is Bubble and the great CGI, venues costumes.
Otherwise, the 2 main characters - their acting was very flat and unfeeling.

A critic best described this movie as "2+ hours wasted that you won't get back". Luc Besson's previous characters (Leeloo, Nikita, Korben Dallas, Ruby Rhod) were all bigger than life, energetic, 3 dimensional characters with flaws and heart. Laureline and Valerian could have been acted by robots ... wait! I think they were. The great CGI, the plot, the quirky venue and all the exposure just can't make up for the feeling the audience has for the main characters which is ... meh! Have L & V crushed by a Glamopod and Rihanna (Bubble) save the day would have made for a far better movie. I look forward to not seeing DeHaan and Delevingne in anything ever again.

Thought it was hoot. Plus VERY creative in the face of it pulling in a little '5th Element,' Star Wars, et-Famous-cetera. Agree with/Like comments by LauraSteinert, pchow2ca, saundersfrederick, mr_chocolate... Warning: If you feel insulted by anything with a little compassion showed toward those a little different than yourself, your self-image is going to hate this. ;-)
