Liddell with his friend Xu Niu (SHAWN DOU), a street smart resistance fighter, recognize the increasing danger so Liddell sends his wife, Florence (ELIZABETH ARENDS) and their two daughters to safety in Canada. Duty-bound, Liddell stays to minister to the civilian victims. Liddell and other foreign nationals are taken as prisoners and placed in one of the many Japanese internment camps where they are forced to endure for two years. The copy I borrowed skipped or froze in places.

Really looked forward to watching this as Eric Liddell is one of my heroes. However, I was thoroughly disappointed not only to the shoddy acting but to the underlying theme as well. Eric Liddell didn't go to China to teach that humanity was good at the core and just needed to be more "nice" and "well mannered" as the film indicates. The Christian message which Eric Liddell preached is just the opposite: mankind is sinful without a Saviour. ONLY JESUS can save a person from their sin and make them into a new person. As such, I believe this film is a slap to his very legacy. Even the reason they give as to why he didn't run on Sundays was "because he had strong principles about family and didn't want to break them," is totally inaccurate. He didn't run on Sundays because it is one of God's Ten Commandments to keep the Sabbath holy. It is the Lord's day. If you want to watch a mushy communistic leaning film, this one's for you. Lord have mercy on all those who break another one of the Ten Commandments by giving false witness and making a profit out of twisting the story of a true martyr of Christ!

This is a slow movie about people and feelings. The acting, directing and cinematography was excellent. Perfect movie for a quiet Friday or Saturday night with your significant other. I won't recommend watching it yourself as some parts are a little boring or painful. 3-stars only because I thought the pace was a little slow, and it was not quite my type of movie this time around. However, it's a very well produced movie.

The true story of an American Olympic runner who was captured and tortured by the Japanese while being a missionary in China during World War II. On Wings of Eagles depicts the life of Eric Liddell, who despite being the fastest runner in the 1925 Olympics, risked it all to be a missionary in China. Liddell spent his time teaching in schools, building relationships, and proclaiming the Gospel to anyone he could.

However, that all changed when the Japanese invaded in 1937.

A truly wonderful sequel to Chariots of Fire.

This stirring film takes up where Chariots of Fire left off. Having won gold for Britain at the 1924 Paris Olympics, Scottish athlete Eric Liddell (Joseph Fiennes) returns to his birthplace China, to follow in the footsteps of his missionary parents. Liddell's life there, serving as a schoolteacher and starting a family, is overshadowed by the Japanese invasion in 1937, which brings great suffering to the Chinese people as another World War looms. Liddell and his friend Xu Niu, a street-smart resistance fighter, recognise the increasing danger, so Liddell sends his wife, Florence, and their two daughters to safety in Canada. Duty-bound, Liddell stays to minister to the civilian victims, continuing to serve and inspire even after being imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp. In conditions of incredible hardship, Liddell's example of patient endurance, love, and selfless dedication to the needs of others will leave an immortal legacy of hope - one that continues to this day.

Based on true events this is a similar story to that of another runner held prisoner by the Japanese in WW2, Louis Zamperini in the movie Unbroken, although Eric Liddell is a civilian and Zamperini a soldier. It is also of note that both men were deeply religious and attempted to forgive and not hate their captors. This is the second major movie based on the life of Liddell, the first was the more famous Chariots of Fire. Although this movie's production value, directing and acting is lacking the story itself is worth seeing since most do not know about Liddell's service to the people of China.

Loved this video. Did not know Eric Liddell’s story. It is incredible what he had to endure in the Japanese internment camp. His life is an inspiration. This is a difficult subject but the story is heartwarming and beautifully produced. Loved seeing the beautiful kites flying especially the eagle ones. The actors do a superb job. Highly recommend this video. At the end of the video - one learns what became of Eric Liddell - truly an amazing man.

We were really interested to know what happened to Eric Liddell and to that extent it was good. However we question some of the scenes and wonder how historically correct it was. will check further.

Liddell was an extraordinary individual. Some scenes especially when they all gather round and sing appear to be fillers are best watched at fast forward.
