This started out as a delightful romance, developing staid characters into full-blooded human beings. But it got convoluted about half-way thru with the "will she, won't he" opportunities getting very stale, since it was a foregone conclusion.

Another good book in this series, the story of Viola, a good follow up to Someone to Hold. A little slow to start but Viola and Marcel got more interesting as the book progressed, although hard to keep track of all the family members!! A good read.

I struggled to reach the end as I am a loyal Mary Balogh fan - but this novel was difficult. The entire plot can be summarized into should the two lovers continue with the forced betrothal or split up. Easily done in a couple pages, or perhaps a chapter but this took 356 pages.

I found this book to be a slow starter. Neither of these people seemed willing or able to change, to let the other person in. He was a rogue. She was a former countess. She wanted to run away a enjoy life for the first time in her life. He did not realize how being with her would change him. The expectations of family weighed on both of them. The happy ending was a long time coming.
