This is an excellent documentary about 'Duga', a Soviet over-the-horizon radar system which cost a huge amount of money: I think I recall something like $400,000,000. was spent by the Russian government. It was built close to the Chernobyl plant which blew up. See informative comments below... (except the one where the commenter called them Ukies). There may have been little evidence for the premise that the disaster was deliberately caused but the premise is a good one and it's more like a hypothesis than a theory. One of the two main characters, Fedor, starts out full of passion in a fearless way. Later he is more careful and seems to have developed a healthy fear of discovery. The other one is Chad Gracia who did the filming, who was also at risk. There is also commentary from Fedor's worried father. When Fedor starts backing away from the project Chad calls him a coward which I don't believe he meant but was just frustrated the film was not going forward as fast as he'd like. I believe they both would've been killed if caught so they truly took a chance to show the world the connection between the Duga and the Chernobyl disaster; and in more ways than one. Fedor is seen climbing this very very very tall maze of the Duga despite it being off limits and very radioactive. There's a scene where he walks naked through this radiation soaked landscape with what looks like plastic wrap covering his feet.He strives for expression in art and toward the end of the film there are more exquisite scenes of him moving about in the nude, which were not sexual but artistic in portraying his life's passion for truth and art. He also painted. If he took all these chances and spent all that time and energy researching and expressing what really went on there in the Ukraine then I think the least we can do is watch his film. One thing that was so great for me was when I learned the Russian's radar could not penetrate across the north pole into North America because of the Northern Lights. Wow! Fantastic film, watch it.

Produced and directed in 2015 by Chad Gracia based on Fedor Alexandrovich's investigation into the Chernobyl disaster, this 81-minute documentary delves into the secret about Duga, a Soviet over-the-horizon radar system used as part of the Soviet missile defense early-warning radar network.
What Fedor discovers seems much more sinister.
The secret police start appearing and one of the crew members is shot by a sniper as revolution, paranoia and terror engulf the crew.
The film shows a crucial, deadly crisis between Ukraine and Russia.

After reading Robert O. Becker's The Body Electric, I wondered about the Russian Woodpecker, and was surprised to find this documentary. It is the perfect companion to Becker's book, and the idea of the Duga radar system. Yikes!

A bit out there but not surprising when dealing with soviet ideals. Very interesting and thow Kino Lorber might not be all together, gives food for thought, as always have wondered what caused Chernobyl.

Fedor Alexandrovich: “Why have I decided to speak out about our information? Because fear is a virus and it can destroy society just like lies. If I stay out of this battle, remain silent…I’m supporting evil. It means I become a villain.”

'Emergency laws threaten arrest for anyone speaking from this stage.'

Fedor Alexandrovich: “We have an emergency. That enemy is the Soviet Union and those who are striving to bring it back. And the Communist Party, which began with the 1930s genocide, also ordered the Chernobyl genocide of 1986. The Chernobyl catastrophe was no accident. It was premeditated, planned, and smoothly executed by Moscow. Because the Chernobyl accident was arranged to hide the billions wasted on an idiotic, non-functioning weapon. They used Ukrainian hands to master a genocide when Moscow called and ordered the staff to explode the reactor. We know their names. Ukraine is just the first step in the rebirth of the Soviet Union. The second step is World War III. Thus, we stand here not for our country alone, but for all humanity. Glory to Ukraine!”

'Soon after, more than 100 protestors were shot dead.

President Yanukovych fled the country and Russian forces entered Ukraine.

And after 23 years of silence, the Woodpecker signal recently returned to the airwaves. It’s been traced to the heart of Russia.'

Ole' Fedor is a severe whack job. So, why was a totally humourless movie made about his bizarre, evidence-less quest to show how the evil Russkies have deliberately tortured the lovable Ukies from time immemorial?
Surely, Mr. Gracia could have found an American equivalent - say one of those that believe that the footage of the planes hitting the world trade towers was faked and everything was done by internal demolition - or maybe didn't happen at all?

Not sure what I just witnessed with this one. It seems to point to a nuclear disaster perpetrated to cover up a massive blunder in the USSR. Lives lost, ecological disaster that will last centuries or millenia, people displaced, political malfeasance. Funky performance art?

This documentary by Ukranian artist Fedor Alexandrvich is an investigation into the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. The dark secret that he stumbles upon proves once again that truth is stranger than fiction.

Interesting insight into how controlling and corrupt the Russian/Soviet government was and is. These tapping woodpecker-like radio signals are being transmitted to the US by this monstrous antennae from near the Chernobyl sight. Nobody knows why. Very strange.

the theory that Chernobyl was blown up on purpose is so crazy, but you never know when it comes to Russia
