Asher is a modern master of Sci-Fi" Starburst magazine"Beautifully paced ... does just as well as at slam-bang action scenes as at painting frightening pictures" Publishers Weekly, starred review "Blends large portions of horror and mystery into an SF tale of revenge and redemption ... a complex and satisfying work" Library Journal, starred review "Hardboiled, fast-paced space opera epic ... Asher's books are similar to the world of Iain M. Banks' Culture universe, but the Polity is arguably a much darker and more vicious environment - and all the better for it" TheRegister.co.uk

Set in author Neal Asher's Polity Universe, this trilogy opener stars Thorvald Spear, who died at the hands of rogue A.I. "Penny Royal" during the Prador-Human War over a century ago. Resurrected via his memory implant, his consciousness placed in a clone body, Thorvald now seeks revenge. He hires cybernetically enhanced Isobel Satomi to track down his nemesis, in the process jeopardizing his second life. For another dramatic, action-packed, and intricately plotted space opera with a large cast of characters, check out Kevin J. Anderson's Saga of Seven Suns series.

I just finished reading a stunning book: Neal Asher's "Dark Intelligence". It speaks to the transformations we put ourselves through, and how that can get away from us, and we become something we never would have intended, paying a price we never would have paid. It is also a great ripping action read. There is a depth of thought, and insight into the human condition, that I have rarely seen expressed in anything like this manner. READ IT! Then think about it. You won't be able to help yourself.......

His wife died recently, and he prefaces this book with a grim observation about her death.
In fact, the whole book is the print version of Gigers alien monster movie artwork: all horror. Like his darkest effort, the Sable Keech book, but even grimmer.
Gore is a constant theme in his books, but redeemed by morality: his Cormac hero saving the day.
Here it's just a dark-gray anti-hero chasing utterly black baddies.
Really depressing stuff.
