A woman on the run uncovers a series of deadly secrets

Jude found the rambling old bookshop when she visited last summer, the high point of a miserable vacation. Now, in the depths of winter, Lowell's store is a warm, safe place.

Jude needs a bolt-hole, Lowell needs an assistant, and when an affordable rental is thrown in, life begins to look up. The gravedigger's cottage isn't perfect for a woman alone, but at least she has quiet neighbors.

Quiet, but not silent. The long dead and the books they left behind have tales to tell, and the bookshop is not the haven it seems to be. Lowell's past and Jude's present are a dangerous blend of secrets and lies, and someone is coming to light the taper that could destroy everything.

Although I've read hundreds of "murder mystery" stories, I think this is the first real "mystery only" book I've ever read. Totally fascinating from the first page to the end. What a writer! I'm going to get all the rest of Catriona's books now. There are few things more exciting than finding a new author to enjoy.

Haven't read any of her series but really like her writing style in the stand-alones. Her characters come alive for me. Very readable.

When I read that Jude ran away to a book store, I knew I had to read this book. The cover does seem to suggest a horror story, but this is not the case. It's a story of family, lost, found, and made. It's about secrets, forgiveness, love, and trust. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Charming but not very mysterious.

Not the scary book I thought it was going to be. Instead, it was insightful, heart-warming, mysterious, and filled with so many twists and turns it kept me guessing until the very end.
