In 'The Next to Die', Sophie Hannah returns with a disturbing tale of a psychopath targeting pairs of best friends, giving each victim a small white book before killing them. Stand-up comedian Kim Tribbeck was given one of these white books by a stranger at a gig last year, but Kim has no friends and trusts no one, so how - and why - could the killer want to target her? If its not her, then who will be the next to die?

This is the worst of the series. Hard to believe that this is the same series that began with Little Face. Hannah's not even trying anymore; her Poirot books are better. I hope this is a blip, and the quality returns in the next one. But this one read like she's run out of ideas, and has adopted a mad-libs approach to characters and motive.

The best clue for the Culver City detectives to four serial murders in 2015 is what comedian Kim Tribbeck has to say. The media hungry society leads and follows in signature Sophie Hannah, and Kim’s manuscript, scattered throughout, adds laughs to the narrative. I’ve read the whole Poirot series and one other Zailer-Waterhouse, and this is my favorite from this author.
