My least favorite of this author, with whom I am unequivocally obsessed. I love her writing so much I’ve read it all, multiple times. And didn’t want to read anything else for a week after as I just wanted to savor living in her world.

This one cut me too deep. Little girls not being cared for, men being assholes to their wives, awful and self absorbed mothers, and small town gossip; somehow this would seem to make a perfect Elizabeth Strout story but this time it just made me really sad. And questioning why the world is so nasty to women and mothers. And religion. I don’t know where to begin on that one.

Wonderful writing, excellent plot twist at the end, horrible characters. Happy sh didn’t bring them back in a sequel because I’d force myself to read it and probably gain a few pounds trying to get through it through too much cookie and tea therapy.

A man, a preacher in fact, struggling to understand his life, his marriage, his small children and at the same time be a source of strength to his parishioners. He's complex in many ways, but very innocent and naive in other ways, and that adds to his struggle. A good book, well-written and thoughtful.

Beautifully written story on a small town minister and his flock. Desperately trying to recover from the unexpected death of his wife he struggles to care for himself let alone those around him.

Another wonderful story by an author who can really see and depict the majesty, joy and sorrow in everyday life. Excellent.

I would love to hear from others who have read this book. I have so many questions about the story which I feel the author left unresolved. I can't get into them as it would be a spoiler but did anyone else feel this way?

I am surprised by the negative reviews. This is a subtle, poignant book; heart-wrenching a times to be sure, but never depressing. Strout writes so beautifully, yet so subtly, that it is easy to underestimate the power of her style. I highly recommend this, and everything she has written.

This book was horrible! I wish I could have stopped reading it a page in. Kept thinking it would get better but it didn't. So boring and depressing!!!
