THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

"My favorite kind of whodunit, kept me guessing all the way through, and reminiscent of Agatha Christie at her best -- with an extra dose of acid." -- Alex Michaelides, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Silent Patient

Everyone's invited...everyone's a suspect...

During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they've chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands--the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves.

The trip begins innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group's tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year's Eve, the cord holding them together snaps, just as a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world.

Two days later, on New Year's Day, one of them is dead. . . and another of them did it.

Keep your friends close, the old adage says. But how close is too close?

DON'T BE LEFT OUT. JOIN THE PARTY NOW.

4 - 4 1/s star read. This thriller was a good read and had a lot of twists and turns along the way. A group of old friends who met at Oxford has an annual New Year's Eve getaway. This year, it is Emma's turn and she has picked a hunting lodge in a remote part of the Highlands in Scotland. Everyone arrives and soon begins to party, but as the time goes on, in flashbacks, cracks in the foundations of the friendships and some of the marriages begin to appear. And when one of the party disappears and is later found dead amidst a blizzard, it soon becomes apparent that someone in their little group of friends might just be a murderer. But who is is? A very compelling read and it kept me turning the pages.

Rambling, disorganized, poorly written, dull. What else can I say. I didn't finish it.

This isn’t a bad read. I would recommend it. It has several characters who are interlinked through school and friend associations. Their backstories come out through a reunion at a remote lodge in Scotland. And then there is a murder of one of the key players. Who in the group, most likely, killed him/her?
The only dislike of this book is that someone can be reminiscing about the past and in the next paragraph go straight into the present without making a smooth segue.

Wow! I couldn't put this one down! Generally, I'm not much of a fan of thrillers (or unlikable characters), but there was something about this mystery that I just couldn't put down. A group of thirtysomethings (none of whom are really likable) head to the Scottish Highlands to celebrate New Years. Almost immediately readers know that one of them is dead, but which has been murdered and who did it? Highly entertaining.

Thoroughly enjoyable. The writing style is quick and sharp, not overly descriptive. A great suspenseful novel where the plot unravels slowly with several twists.

This book was okay. Descriptions of the lodge and the area of Scotland were good, but the characters weren't very likeable and I never got attached to any of them. The identify of the victim is kept from the reader but was fairly easy to guess. A bit of twist as to the killer though.

An enjoyable whodunnit in the tradition of the Golden Age of Mysteries but with a modern twist. My review:

An homage to the classic locked room mystery, this chilling suspense novel perfectly evokes its Highland setting. In an intriguing twist, the author keeps readers guessing about which character has been found murdered, building tension as the plot ticks away. The alternating viewpoints between the posh, upper-class friends and the two secretive caretakers provide plenty of momentum up to the ending's reveal. With plenty of red herrings and potential suspects, fans of classic mysteries might appreciate this nod to the oeuvre.

There are worse reads, but this isn't what I'd call "good." None of the characters are remotely likable. The plot tries so hard to be gripping, but it's really just kind of meh. And it's too bad about the copyediting... is it really that hard to learn how to use a comma?

Clever, creepy, and compelling! I would love to see this made into a movie.
