"Lizbeth Rose is hired onto a new crew for a seemingly easy protection job, transporting a crate into Dixie, just about the last part of the former United States of America she wants to visit. But what seemed like a straight-forward job turns into a massacre as the crate is stolen. Up against a wall in Dixie, where social norms have stepped back into the last century, Lizbeth has to go undercover with an old friend to retrieve the crate as what's inside can spark a rebellion, if she can get it back in time"--

This is the second book about Gunnie Rose, our teenage gunslinger in a future/alternate America. Healed from her previous adventure, Rose has joined up with a new crew, but things go horribly wrong when the train they are riding on is derailed, the crate they are protecting is stolen, and their leader is murdered. Gunnie finds herself in Dixie, which doesn't take kindly to pants-wearing, gun-toting females. Thankfully she runs into Ely, who is also after the crate, but for a very different reason. A hard boiled tale with a tough female heroine written in Harris' typical style. Gritty and well paced. Excellent read.

Another dystopian delight from Charlaine Harris. VERY hard to put down. I love these characters, settings, and struggles to survive. I especially enjoy the tremendous efforts Lizbeth has to make to be accepted--begrudging every second and every mannerism she has to adopt.

I enjoyed this book. It was difficult not to just sit and read it! It was fast-paced, violent. The new divided country was interesting too. I also enjoy the Russian Magician characters. Sexy Eli returns. A very enjoyable fantasy. I hope there will be at least a third book!

Charlaine's books always move at a thrilling pace. I love the way this series breaks the former United States up into self-exiled Dixie,
