A very different approach to events in 20th ce ntury East Africa and Italian colonialism with a strong story-plot

Really compelling novel about events I was aware of in a general sense but didn't know much about. Makes me want to read some non-fiction about this war, though maybe not right away.
Being about war, it's a brutal read sometimes, but also a beautiful one.

A historical novel set in WWII Ethiopia. Unique in that it deals with women in military roles. This was not an easy read, as there are frequent casual scenes of rape. While I enjoyed Old Drift more than this title, they will appeal to similar readers.

We did a bookclub on this one. 3 of the 6 people finished it. It was slow. Those that finished it mostly liked it, but it was not an easy read. I listened to it and gave up. We've decided to pick easier books to get into during this Covid time.

I don't typically like historical fiction, however this book is an exception. A story of women's roles during Ethiopia's resistance to Italian fascism in the 1930's, this saga captivated me through the strength of its characters and the lyricism of the author.
