Man, I thought the first book was good, but Kelly Yang has outdone herself. Mia's story and those of the people around her really make you think about what is going on in the country. The fact that this takes place in the 90s but still resonates so much with what is going on today shows how much work we have to do as a society. I can't wait for the third book coming out this year!

This one took me a while to read but so worth it! The saddest, amazing, beautiful book. I loved how Mia was able to change her teacher's mind.

I enjoyed this book very much. I also read Front Desk(the first book in the series) and Mia is such a great character and I think many middle grade readers will identify with and look up to her.

"We were both girls with big hopes and dreams. but because of one piece of paper, we were on two different sides of the law. I didn't really understand before what that paper meant. But now, I was starting to realize, it meant the difference between living in freedom and living in fear." (p171)
