My new doctor recommended a completely different book. I found this book very informative and not preachy. It definitely got my interest. I love how he gave recipes and a 30 day eating plan to go along with the recipes. You can follow his 30 day eating plan if you choose because he switches it up from day to day so you don't get bored or you can design your own based on the information he gives you in the book. I had the book for 2 weeks and by the 3rd week I had lost 7 pounds. No exercise, just eating this way. I'm so glad I got this book. Ended up purchasing it because I loved it so much.

Full of easy to understand information, plus tons of more complicated facts for those who want them. The Paleo diet works for me, perhaps this lifestyle change could work for you too?

Paleolithic diets are MUCH better than the standard diet in America today (with the fact of its complete restriction of grains, legumes, and soy), however Wolff, like his mentor Cordain has two major problems in his approach.

Number one, wild animals back then - like today - have significant levels of saturated fats and primitive peoples (as research has shown time and time again) prioritise on the most fatty cuts. Paleolithic is NOT low fat!

Number two is the over emphasis on fruits and vegetables.

Once the primate that became Man left the jungle, he no longer had routine access to RIPE fruits and vegetables. People with no farming or wilderness experience fail to grasp that fruits and vegetables are NOT ripe year around, and have very short time windows of when they are ripe. And Paleolithic Man had no means of preservation.

What was available year round was animal foods. Fatty, high protein, no carb animal foods.

Also, the Comment on a Cordain book, as to the life span of Paleolithic Man appears to have been pulled out of thin air. And while the AVERAGE life span of Paleolithic Man was lower than that of today, that is because infant mortality (which was horrific back then - for both the mother and baby), infectious diseases (no vaccines or antibiotics), and accident rates of just daily life were high. That caused the AVERAGE to show abnormally low. Paleolithic populations that reached adulthood tended to live much longer, easily into 60s and longer.

Specifically, archeological and anthropology experts and research consistently show that when Neolithic Agriculture (full scale farming, with heavy emphasis on starches - grains, legumes, and starchy vegetables - took hold, those Neolithic Peoples had MUCH lower life spans, significant chronic illness problems, dental problems, and were significantly shorter than their Paleolithic predecessors (to include very early Mesolithic nomadic animal herders who continued to eat primarily animal foods, minimal WILD plant and foods, and no Agricultural crops).

LCHF is an even better evolution of Paleo, with a strict Paleo Diet being by nature LCHF. In that regard, read "Low Carb High Fat Diet Revolution". A FIVE STAR +++++ book!

great book and worth the read. Very science-y and geeky at points but bare with it and you might learn something.
Personally I'm not 100% paleo but I know that just adding in more fat to my diet and I already feel better.

The argument is that we haven't adapted to the change from hunter -gatherer to agrarian, and that therefore everything agrarian makes us sick/fat/etc.

There's arguably some truth in this - we haven't had much time to evolve - but remembering that evolution is about keeping us well enough to reproduce our genes - the book didn't convince me that we did that much better in hunter-gatherer times. (A single archaeological study is used to support too much of the argument).

There's decidedly something wrong with the modern western diet - but eliminating all agrarian foods ignores Japanese/Mediterranean and other diets (fish/vegetable/rice based) which suggest that the the problem is with some of the agrarian components of diet, not all of them.

A fantastic read full of humour, but not lacking in the science department. As mentioned by someone else, Robb Wolf has a fantastic blog to follow if you are interested in the "paleo" lifestyle. Anyone interested in preventing disease or healing diseases like heart disease, diabetes, mental health, Crohn's etc. should pick up this book!

This book was great. lots of science and information peppered with a real sense of humour. I took the 30 day challenge to work the flour,starch,grains, sugar etc out of my system and 8 months later I am still a "caveman" I feel so much better and certainly know when I have eaten non paleo items. I recommend anyone with stomach issues, allergies etc try this lifestyle even for 30 days. you will see a difference and yes, there is plenty to eat. I even ate Paleo on a cruise and did just fine.
