I don't have any qualms of singers performing their own compositions - Ella F., Peggy Lee - to name a few... and they came out with few but classic works. Madeline came out a couple of years ago with an all-original album, Bare Bones and with this, almost all again! What an output but are they worth remembering? The songs are devoid of musicality and most likely could be redeemed perhaps of their lyrics. What we need in jazz for it to survive specially in vocals are good songs not to mention good singers. Madeline has a strong resemblance to Billie Holiday and I guess she banked on that to get known but apart from that, this album is just in essence an exercise of pushing oneself too much to be all original without inspiration. I guess she needs to get back to sing more time-tested songs before her muse would pay her a visit again.
