Stanley is tried and convicted for a crime he did not commit, a crime he had no part in. As punishment, he is sentenced to Camp Green Lake, a reform camp for boys forced to work day in and day out in the hot sun—what are they doing? Digging holes. Stanley blames his misfortunes on his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather, whose actions brought a curse to the family name. Sacher brilliantly weaves together past and present, allowing the reader to gain insight into what was, what is, and what might be. Although this is a book for children, it is both youthful and mature, making it a great read for all ages.
