Overhyped beyond compare, 12 YEARS A SLAVE didn't deserve, in my opinion, the Best Picture Oscar. I don't mean to detract from Solomon Northup's story, as it deserves to be told (and Patsy's story, too), but it's not the most haunting and meaningful depiction I've ever seen; ROOTS was. ROOTS is over three decades old, yet it encapsulated more about the unjust experiences of real flesh-and-blood slaves than anything I've ever seen. The strength of the human spirit to not just survive but thrive has never been portrayed more vividly to me than ROOTS did. I'm sorry to say it, but I don't think Steve McQueen's film will stand the test of time. It didn't add anything to the conversation. Personally, I don't recommend it; for an indictment and greater understanding of slavery, I highly recommend ROOTS instead.
