I think the author so desperately wants to make the protagonist seem NOT a monster that her values and behaviours are boringly pedestrian. This includes loyalty to treacherous family and squeamishness over tough choices. I liked the original character a lot - flawed and all - but I lost respect for her the series - she bored me. And, we really did not need another character named "Cat". The other predictable thing was how all the male vampires are possessive and take exception to even a wrong glance at their beloved. That's more unnatural than vampirism. Author is trying too hard to prove their love for "quirky" human women. And, I thought Cathy excelled in making unintelligent tactical decisions. These endangered everyone, especially after she discovered her fanatical motherhood. Boring. The kid is not, though. Hopefully author will tone down the machismo and middle class morality for her next books - she'd be so much to read if she did that.
