A book that combines serious scholarship with the deft hand of a writer. One feels that Massie, on balance, believes that Peter, especially given the world standards of behavior toward fellow human beings, was a benefactor of Russia, but he does not sweep under the rug his cruelties or personal flaws. Massie also enriches our understanding of the times by providing background on the other important rulers.
