Rarely do films leave me feeling emotionally drained as this one did; and that is positive as that is what a good film should do to you. A real tearjerker, it was beautifully film and crafted into the era it is set in very well. I especially like Matthias Schoenaerts as the German oberleutant who is more of a composer at heart than a soldier, and I thought Michelle Williams did a very good job as the repressed young married woman who opens up to the German officer who is as human as herself. The rest of the supportive cast is excellent and the work done to portray the French as a people caught up in a time when sometimes the worst or the best of themselves comes to the surface.
