This is one of the least-maturely written books I have encountered in almost six decades of reading. It's a horrible extended lesson in the writerly crime of telling-not-showing, and Follett, never the most agile of writers, allows his sentences to splat on the reader's ear like an egg tossed from a three-story window. It reads like chick lit written by a 14-year-old. From the author of "Eye of the Needle" and "Key to Rebecca," this novel is an enormous letdown.
