The land of trolls has a new story, and it's not with the Trylle. Bryn has had a tough life; both Kanin and Skojare, unable to get the abilities from either and forever sticking out like a sore thumb with her pale skin, blond hair and blue eyes. Living with the ingrained prejudice and disgust of the Kanin would be hard enough without trying to make it into the most elite and coveted position in her society apart from being royalty. The Hogdragen. Better than trackers, harder than being a guard, it's a highly respectable position and Bryn won't let anything stand in her way of it. She will work for it on her own, and will do anything to secure her place among the Hogdragen- even if it means pushing away the guy she's falling for. She's already on her way, being the 3rd best tracker the Kanin have, not losing a single changeling in the 12 missions she's been on. But when she runs into the traitor Konstantin Black during a mission, who's intent seems to be kidnapping her charge, Bryn's life changes irreversibly. He tried to murder her father. He gave her a permanent scar. And he's been missing for four years. But despite the deep urge and need to kill him and take her revenge, Bryn feels like she's missing the bigger picture. Why does Konstantin seem to be wherever she is? Why is he coming out of hiding now, and what is his purpose in taking changelings? Finally, why does it feel like he regretted his and couldn't stop himself in the assassination attempt against the Chancellor, instead of mentally snapping like everyone says? As she tries the navigate the stress of her job, the confusion surrounding Black, and the feelings she's not ready to admit she has for her very forbidden boss, Bryn is beginning her journey; but where will it lead her? I got to say, even though the only mentions of Loki and Wendy were off-hand and barely there (which I was pretty saddened by, I want them to make an actual, face-to-face appearance with Bryn!) many of our beloved characters from the Trylle have been introduced, such as Tove, Bain, Finn and Ember (who I forgot moved to Kanin with her family at the end of the last one. It's really neat to see her grow up some more and be friends with Bryn)! I loved these moments and though I didn't read the other series too long ago, I still felt deep nostalgia.
