What’s to like: it’s fairly true to the book, it looks expensive (lovely locales) and well made, and it has Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston. What’s not to like: the plot drags; Hugh Laurie is just not menacing enough as the villain and Tom Hiddleston just looks bemused at being there. Neither are believable as the ruthless arms dealer (Laurie) or the vengeful, driven spy (Hiddleston) described in the book. Laurie started his career as a comedian (Fry and Laurie, Black Adder, Jeeves and Wooster) and while excellent as House, he’s not progressed to playing a bad guy. Hiddleston is eye candy wandering through the scenes. The arms deal demonstration was well done and Hollander as the nasty Corky provided some degree of evil and suspense, but otherwise this series was a bit of a disappointment.
