From the fantastically funny minds of Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen comes another deliciously dark picture book. One day a mouse is wandering the woods. Then it gets eaten by a wolf. This revelation is so different from conventional folktale wisdom, that it comes as a surprise, and yet it only gets better, for a duck resides in the wolf's stomach. When the mouse sees that the duck is living the high life, he decides to stay as well. They are fed, and they are safe there. However, when a hunter comes along, and their home is threatened, the pair makes some amusing choices. Klassen uses the same type of style that he did in Sam and Dave dig a hole ( and there are other comparisons that could be made storywise), there is the dark earthy tones inside the stomach, the lighter hued objects and characters popping out a top it, and more. The Wold, The Duck, and The Mouse is also an explanatory story of a sort, telling about why the wolf howls, but this addition is only meant to wrap things up, it is not the point of the book. The takeaway is that sometimes misfortune can be fortunate, you just never know.
