This is a book that has exceptionally well developed characters and an excellent concept! It is well written and highly entertaining. **possible spoiler** My one criticism (and it is a big one) is that I find it highly unbelievable that at the end of the world there would be so little diversity in a place as diverse as the United States of America. The only black major character is Mother Abigail who is the definition of the Magical Negro trope. I also find the way women are written are very much from a white male perspective. This is a book I loved as a youth, but it has not aged well for me.
