Shadow Sands by Robert Bryndza is the second book in the Kate Marshall series but also works well as a standalone mystery. Kate is a professor and part-time private investigator. While scuba diving with her teenage son, they discover the body of a young man floating in the Shadow Sands reservoir on the moorlands. When police declare this to be an accident, Kate disagrees and puts on her investigator cap to determine if this death might be a murder. She soon realizes that several young people from the area have disappeared without a trace. A serial murderer is on the prowl on the moors. This is an original mystery and the lead character is flawed but sympathetic. The setting serves the story well and adds atmosphere. The ending is unexpected and a true surprise. All in all a very satisfying read. I look forward to reading more books by Robert Bryndza. Highly recommended. Little Cruelties by Liz Nugent paints a portrait of a dysfunctional family (with a capital D). The Drumm brothers of Dublin, Will, Brian and Luke have spent their childhood seeking love and approval from their mother, a selfish performer with a giant ego. This competition has driven a wedge between the brothers and they turn against each other, go out of their way to make the others miserable. This does not change when they become adults. The rivalry simply becomes more cruel. And this ends with two brothers attending the third brother’s funeral. Which one died and what caused his death? The narration is by each of the brothers, at different ages. This helps the reader get to know each one individually. This is dark family drama at its best: reading Little Cruelties is so fascinating that it is difficult to look away. Highly recommended to readers who enjoy family fiction with a helping of suspense. The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop by Fannie Flagg is the sequel of the popular Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. The problem with sequels is that they rarely live up to the original and unfortunately this is the case here. I am going against the grain on this one because it looks like most reviewers are extremely fond of the new novel. But to me it seems that the author wanted to squeeze one last drop from a well-loved cozy story. This book is an update of the lives of the characters in Fried Green Tomatoes, mainly Bud Threadgoode and his quirky relatives. While it was fun to catch up, it quickly became uninteresting. Cozy fiction is usually Fannie Flagg’s forte but this was too much charm and not enough style. The first story was original and entertaining, this one lacks substance. Please remember that this is only my opinion. Snow by John Banville is a murder mystery and police procedural which takes place in County Wexford, Ireland. The year is 1957 and Detective Inspector St. John Strafford has been tasked with investigating the apparent murder of a priest, at Ballyglass House, ancestral home of the Osborne family. A snow storm is raging, the family appears unable to offer precise help in the matter and the DI’s detective has gone missing. As intriguing as this mystery is, what shines here is the quality of the prose. It is a pure pleasure to spend time immersed in this book. Banville is the 2005 Booker Prize winner for his novel The Sea: enough said. I highly recommend Snow to all mystery readers and every other reader. The Bass Rock by Evie Wyld takes place over several hundred years. This is the story of three women: Sarah, Ruth and Vivianne. Young Sarah is being persecuted by men who suspect her of being a witch. Many years later, after the end of WWII, Ruth is newly married to a widower, has become the stepmother of two young boys and has relocated with her new family to an unfamiliar part of Great Britain. Sixty years later, upon Ruth’s death, Vivianne has been tasked with sorting through her house in order to put it on the market. All three storylines are linked in several ways but the main similarity is the way women are treated by the men in their lives. Nothing seems to have changed from the era of witchcraft to modern times. The Bass Rock presents the reader with three interesting and well-developed female roles. There is food for thought here. Highly recommended. Thank you to Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. The Bass Rock by Evie Wyld takes place over several hundred years.
