Well, that's over, and it was pretty good. Good enough to read it in one night and sacrifice sleep, anyway. I may have even had some tears in my eyes at the end.
One thing I appreciated about this series and the author's writing is the humour in the dialogue. The books at times felt very bleak, yet Alina and Mal and Nikolai were able to make me laugh.
Still don't like Mal, though. What can I say? I infinitely prefer brooding, dark immortals, or handsome and charming princes over boy-next-door childhood friends.Well, that's over, and it was pretty good. I felt like I slipped back in time to 15 years ago when I loved Tamora Pierce and her Tortall books. It was like picking up something old and familiar, even though I had never read it before.
Looking forward to completing this series!

Really great collection of works if you like to just look through it.
There are many essays by famous and prominent Canadians as well; I did not read all of them.

I got into this book right away and finished it pretty quickly. The biggest issue is that it's a predictable middle book in a trilogy - I felt like I had read this before. Also, I do not like Mal. I didn't in the first and I didn't in this one, so he'd better get pretty awesome in the 3rd.I got into this book right away and finished it pretty quickly. I don't usually read mysteries but I read the first one years ago and liked it. Finally got around to the second.
Charles Lenox is a likeable gentleman detective. I like the history and bits about Victorian society. The mystery also was interesting and I was hooked.

I probably would have dropped this early on if I was reading it on my own, but I persevered because it was for book club, and the 2nd half was a lot better than the first.
The characters were all pretty interesting; my favourite was Juliet. Everything is brought together and wrapped up in the end.
Even though the author described the house and setting many times, I had such a hard time picturing it in my head. I also was a little freaked out because I knew what happened and apparently I never read books that are even slightly suspenseful so I couldn't sleep.
I'm not sure I would recommend it unless you've got nothing better to do. I mean, it was entertaining, but at the end I asked myself, what was the point of reading this? I'm all for reading just for entertainment, but there are a lot of other books I would have rather spent my time on, I think.
That being said, I still give it 4 stars because I like her writing style, and it did captivate me.I probably would have dropped this early on if I was reading it on my own, but I persevered because it was for book club, and the 2nd half was a lot better than the first.

It took me a while to get into, but then you start to see why it's called "Cotillion", because there are so many characters and sidestories. It all gets wrapped up neatly and tidily. A great work by Georgette Heyer. Not in my top 5, but still recommended. There are some really funny parts, too, and Freddy is such a breath of fresh air, with his obsession with fashion and his insistence that he's not intelligent when he has the most common sense of anyone.

Very interesting story and amazing artwork.

A book perfect for a Jane Austen fan, English Lit. Major, Canadian - oh hey, that's me!
This book had me laughing out loud so much. It's hilarious! The main character lives in Edmonton and works at the Mall. She observes people around her, sells a record amount of shoe polish, and meets a fellow Penguin Classics lover.
Romance was not really the focus of this book, which I thought could have been more fleshed out, but it was overall satisfying. In the end, the main character comes to grips with the fact that she loves Edmonton - it's not Chawton or NYC or any famous historical place but it's in her soul.A book perfect for a Jane Austen fan, English Lit. Interesting, thought-provoking, inspiring read.
I was actually most interested in the parts about his being a neurosurgeon - I don't know much about the medical world in general so it was fascinating to read the kinds of things they do.
It's kind of hard reading a book where you know the author died before completing it. But I absolutely loved his words he wrote to his daughter at the end.Interesting, thought-provoking, inspiring read.

Even though it was written over 150 years ago, the characters are so relatable (especially Jo, for me).
A heartwarming treasure.

Book written by an Instagrammer (@theluckyfewofficial) who has adopted 3 children; one is a different race and two of them have Down syndrome.
The author is a Christian and is very vocal about her trust in and dependence on God and His plan. Her faith is her stronghold throughout her journey of infertility and adoption.
As a parent of a child with Down syndrome, this book really hit home but I highly recommend it to anyone.
My favourite quotes:
"I had placed him - the one true, omniscient, omnipresent, powerful God - on the same level as myself. I was forgetting that not only does God want my life to be greater than I can even begin to plan for, but he is the coach and writer and director and everything. He is everything!" (pg 58)
"'Every breath she will ever breathe has already been accounted for. Nothing I do or don't do is going to change that.'" (Pg 103)
"It was important for me to understand that when I said yes and followed God into these new relationships, I was also saying yes to brokenness, to pain, to surrender - and to knowing the grace of God more fully." (Pg 142)
"If things were comfortable and easy - if I did not have adoption and Down syndrome and heart defects and birth parents and babies with someone else's eyes, hair, and skin tone - I would not have needed God as desperately as I had. And if I had not needed him, or rather, if I had not recognized my need for him, I would not have known him." I've read many Pride and Prejudice retellings but this one has to be the best of all because Mr. Darcy is a dragon-rider.
Honestly, I don't think I can sing this book enough praise. What do I like? Jane Austen, clean romance, and fantasy. What do I like even more? A book that combines all 3.
When I first picked it up, I was in a bit of a reading slump, after dropping a couple books, and couldn't remember why I had ordered it. The story started off humorous and I was intrigued, and then there was suddenly a handsome dragon-rider, and I thought, hey this sounds good. It wasn't until her parents were arguing that I realized it sounded suspiciously familiar.
And it just got better and better. I liked all of the changes that White did to the characters, but appreciated how she stayed loosely on the plot. I'd almost say I prefer this to the original P&P because of the fantasy setting. The battle at the end had me freaked out; parts of it were even gruesome, but it was so good. It doesn't really have magic, but the mythical creatures and world are so interesting and made me want to read the sequels.
I'm pretty sure this book has made my entire year. It's going up on my list of favourite books. I just LOVE finding a gem like this.I've read many Pride and Prejudice retellings but this one has to be the best of all because Mr. Darcy is a dragon-rider.

I recommend reading the first one (Spin the Dawn) before looking at this review.
Pretty good sequel, although I enjoyed the first book more. The first half of this book was a little meh but it definitely got better in the second.
I found it repetitive (how many times did she have to say she was a monster?) and it still irked me that she calls Edan a boy when he's literally a thousand years old.
That being said, I do think it was worth reading if you enjoyed the first one to see what happens to Maia! Recommended for YA readers who like fantasy and alternate historical China.I recommend reading the first one (Spin the Dawn) before looking at this review.
